Hansens Disease (Leprosy)

Hansen’s disease (leprosy) is a bacterial disease that can cause varying types of skin lesions, reddened bumps on face, hands and feet, and thickening of the skin. Anyone infected by the bacteria can get the disease. Leprosy is very rare in the U.S., but it is common in other parts of the world. Places where leprosy is common include South East Asia and Latin America. Symptoms may range from 9 months to 20 years. Prolonged contact with an infected person can transmit the disease.
