Tickborne diseases

Tickborne diseases

There are a variety of tickborne diseases ticks carry that cause human disease. To reduce the chances of getting a tickborne disease, limit exposure to ticks during the warmer months (April-September) by avoiding wooded or bushy areas with high grass, and by walking in the center of trails and use insect repellant that contains 20-30% DEET on exposed skin and clothing. Conduct full body tick checks upon returning from tick-infested areas. Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, so carefully examine pets and clothing. Tumble clothes in a dryer on high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks.

Tick submission form

If you have a tick (or ticks) you would like to submit to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, click the button below and fill out the form for each tick group. For the purpose of this survey, a tick group is defined as ticks collected on the same date and/or from the same location (i.e., found on the same people, animals, or trails). After you complete the survey, reach out to your local health department to coordinate getting the tick(s) shipped to UPHL. You can find your local health department here.
