SARS-CoV-2 One Health Projects in Utah

SARS-CoV-2 at the Zoo:

  • Health officials collaborated with Utah’s Hogle Zoo to investigate SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) in lions and humans, vaccinate kids and zoo staff during a clinic at the zoo, and test zoo staff to help safeguard snow leopards. One Health investigation of SARS-CoV-2 on mink farms:

  • Health officials collaborated on several epidemiologic investigations on mink farms to identify the source of SARS-CoV-2 introduction, track cross-species transmission, and assess viral evolution in people, farmed-mink, dogs, and feral cats.

Utah SARS-CoV-2 animal surveillance system:

  • As part of a nationwide effort to improve reporting gaps for SARS-CoV-2 in animals, Utah health officials collaborated with various One Health partners, including the Utah Public Health Lab, the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Lab, the Division of Wildlife Resources, Utah’s Hogle Zoo, and local animal control and veterinary clinics to build a SARS-CoV-2 animal surveillance system.

Other SARS-CoV-2 animal surveillance projects and resources:

  • USDA APHIS surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) continues to monitor cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals across the United States. USDA APHIS continually updates the APHIS dashboard with confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 in animals.
  • Building an Early Warning System for SARS-CoV-2 and Other Animal Diseases: APHIS and its partners are conducting various projects to understand how the SARS-CoV-2 virus behaves in different animals, how it moves between animals and people, and what we can do to stop the chain of disease transmission.
  • Global cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals: The World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) has worked intensively with its network of experts to better understand the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its emergence. Their website provides case reports of SARS-CoV-2 infection in animals across the globe.
